Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions people call and email us about most. Anything not covered here — call or come in.

  • Is jiu-jitsu a good sport for a 6-year-old?

Yes, and we have two age-appropriate classes for that age. Our Tiny Champs class is 3 to 4 years old and is mostly games that teach body awareness, balance and following instruction. Our Little Champs classes split 5 to 6 and 7 to 10, and a six-year-old lands in the younger group where a class is a warm-up, one or two techniques taught slowly, partnered drilling with a coach on the mat, and a game at the end. Kids leave with more focus and confidence, not bruises.

  • What should I look for when choosing a jiu-jitsu gym?

Look at the instructors — who they are, what belt they hold and where they trained. Look at the kids' curriculum if you have a child: are classes split by age, and is somebody actually teaching, or is it free rolling. Look at class size, whether the gym offers a real trial so you can try before you pay, and how clean the mats and changing rooms are. We welcome a visit — come watch a class, meet the coaches and see the room before you decide.

  • Do I need experience or a Gi for my first class?

No to both. Your first class is free, no experience needed, and we lend you a Gi to wear so you do not need to buy one before you know whether jiu-jitsu is for you. Wear something you can move in underneath, bring water, and arrive about ten minutes early so we can get you signed in and on the mat.

  • What is the difference between Gi and No Gi?

Gi is the traditional uniform — jacket, pants and belt — and Gi classes let you grip the fabric to control your partner and set up submissions. No Gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts, without those grips, so the pace is faster and the control comes from underhooks, overhooks and body position rather than cloth. Most students train both; they teach the same art from two angles and each one exposes gaps in the other.

  • How much does membership cost?

We publish three monthly rates and there is a one-time signup fee on top of the first month. Homeschool Kids (two classes a week, daytime) is $155 a month; Unlimited Kids is $189 a month; Adults is $205 a month. Family discounts and a 25% discount for veterans, first responders and public servants are available — call or come in and we will work out the right combination for your household.

  • Where are you and when are classes?

We are at 2610 Main Street, Buda, TX — one address, on-site parking, one set of mats. Classes run seven days a week with mornings, afternoons and evenings covered on most days, and the times shift a little each term. The live weekly timetable, including which programs run at which times, is at /schedule.

  • Is Gracie Barra Buda good for complete beginners?

Yes. Most of the students on our mats started jiu-jitsu here, from zero, as adults with jobs and families. Fundamentals classes are built for a first-day white belt: a coach walks the room, techniques are taught in small pieces, and partners of every experience level are used to slowing down for someone new. Your first class is free — you will not be the only one there who is trying it for the first time.

  • Do you offer classes for women?

Yes. Our Women's program is a dedicated class for women who want to train jiu-jitsu with other women — same curriculum as the mixed classes, taught in an all-female room. Members of the Women's program are welcome in every other class on the schedule too; the Women's slot is an addition, not a substitute.
